The New South American Power Couple
How Guyana-Brazil Trade Surged 1,600%

In 2020, trade between Guyana and Brazil was US$58 million. In 2026, it hit US$1 billion.
Brazil’s Ambassador to Guyana, Maria Cristina de Castro Martins, confirmed the figure ahead of a high-level business forum hosted by the World Trade Centre Georgetown. Crude oil accounts for roughly 98 per cent of Guyana’s exports to Brazil. In return, Brazil sends machinery and industrial equipment for construction, mining, and oil production.

But the relationship is expanding beyond oil. Guyana’s Chief Investment Officer pointed to new opportunities in transportation, logistics, warehousing, hospitality, agro-processing, and fertiliser production as infrastructure corridors between the two countries improve.
Brazil is positioning itself as Guyana’s bridge to South American markets. Guyana is positioning itself as Brazil’s gateway to the Caribbean. Exploratory talks on deeper integration with MERCOSUR are underway.
A trade relationship that barely existed five years ago is now one of the fastest-growing in the hemisphere.
